1. 280,000 fatalities in 2004 and 15,000 in 2011 in Japan with the fallout lasting to this day. Events where you remember exactly where you were when you heard. For me one of the scariest natural disasters. What about you?

8. My first site of the Japanese earthquake was this black mass of water rolling over farmer's fields. Not stopping. Taking houses with it. People driving towards it. People speeding away from it. It just wasn't stopping. I wasn't even thinking of the people I was watching going to thier deaths. I was just frozen in disbelief at the power of nature.

10. I was on the USS Abraham Lincoln(CVN-72) when the Indonesian Tsunami struck. We provided Humanitarian Aid to Banda Ache.

14. Japan had planned for a 'Typical' tsunami as in 1960. That's what their defences were designed for-5m. They hadn't considered the 1000 year tsunami, which happened in CE 869, which also hit Sendai with a 9.1 with 10m , because, like in Sumatra, they DIDN'T know about it!
    After 2004, Japan were trying to update their defences, but budget constraints after the global recession didn't allow it. The fact they had alerts, detection systems, education and training, still saved countless lives in comparison to S.E Asia.

21. Oh boo hoo this is all happening because we are using fossil fuels and people are actually dumb enough to believe that even though the tsunamis earthquakes and stuff like this was happening long before we started using fossil fuels

22. Even Washington State got hit with that tsunami and along the Pacific Ocean and into the Puget Sound we were finding debris.
