PORTUGAL – This is the official list of the 7 best Portuguese foods – these are the best foods you don’t want to miss eating when you’re in Portugal! No, whenever there’s a list, there’s bound to be some controversy, and many will say that certain dishes should have been on this list… but it was voted on by locals and this is the official list of food!

I traveled around Portugal to eat these 7 best Portuguese foods!

1. Sardinha Assada – Grilled Sardines
A Merendinha do Arco Bandeira, Lisbon, Portugal (https://maps.app.goo.gl/pvQvpCTH81Zn9geZ8) – Located right in the heart of Lisbon, this restaurant serves authentic and classic Portuguese foods. I came here specifically to try their grilled sardines. Now, just to let you know, unfortunately I wasn’t in Portugal during sardines season, and if you are, you’d find fresh sardines everywhere. But they were still good and this restaurant is a great place to try local Portuguese food.

2. Queijo Serra da Estrela – Portuguese soft sheep cheese
Manteigaria Silva, Time Out Market Lisboa (https://maps.app.goo.gl/AhsJgsfDgtCXe2iv7) – Famous for their cured meats and cheese, we next tried the legendary Queijo Serra da Estrela, a Portuguese sheep cheese from the mountains nearby Lisbon.

3. Caldo Verde – Green Soup
A Merendeira, Lisbon, Portugal (https://maps.app.goo.gl/dhkHRJZvF4qKTCiM7) – Next up on this list of best Portuguese food, we’re eating caldo verde, and comforting Portuguese green soup made with kale and a potato pureed broth. It’s one of the most comforting and easy to eat dishes in Portugal.

4. Alheira de Mirandela – Bread and Meat Sausage
Solar Moinho de Vento, Porto, Portugal (https://maps.app.goo.gl/oFb9L1C5BSN4dTLU7) – In Porto, the next dish on this list is Alheira de Mirandela, a bread and meat sausage that’s unlike any other sausage I’ve ever had.

5. Leitão da Bairrada – Roast Suckling Pig
Nova Casa Dos Leitões, Aguim, Portugal (https://maps.app.goo.gl/oZkfY42uWnXfXzBL9) – Few foods in all of Portugal are more loved than Portuguese roast suckling pig. And to eat the best suckling pig you need to go to Mealhada!

6. Arroz de Marisco – Seafood Rice
O Jorge do Peixe, Quarteira, Portugal (https://maps.app.goo.gl/EqXjgrhhM9JpSkEu8) – Now we’re heading to the south of Portugal, seafood heaven. And one of the best Portuguese foods is arroz de marisco, seafood rice.

7. Pastel de Belém
Manteigaria, Lisbon, Portugal (https://maps.app.goo.gl/rHQep5y49TtK2n62A) – Probably the most famous of all Portuguese sweets is the egg tart, and the original is made in Belem, near to Lisbon. However, Manteigaria is another place that makes them well and has many loyal customers. 8 years ago when I went to the original in Belem: https://youtu.be/yNEGYdZIsbo?si=LVo-flZUurrgqeu7&t=74

That wraps up this list of 7 best Portuguese foods, don’t miss eating them when you’re in Portugal!

  1. Mark the happy vibe is gone, come to Africa we are so happy vibe, you can come visit my tent, our best dish is the rice that oxfam left the other day, and for dessert we have coconuts, but we have to go pick the coconuts.

  2. Literalmente es una cocina maravillosa, no le tiene nada que envidiar a la cocina Francesa, Española, Italiana, etc. Sus arroces y mariscos son de otro mundo, literalmente.

  3. Mark did you know that the place you went to for Caldo Verde, A Merendeira, is open from 11am to… 7am 🙂 . Its very normal that after a long night out on a friday / saturday night, we go eat a caldo verde and a pao com chouriço, before heading back home 🙂

  4. My dude if someone followed your review they would be bouncing up and down Portugal. Maybe edit it on the way the trip flows. I mean that's the beauty of editing right 🙂

  6. As a portuguese native,,, you have only lightly touched our gastronomic richness, imagine squid, corn meal cakes (broas), chanfana roasted goat, fried sparrows, eaten whole bones and all, you can't imagine our epicurean diversity, it's even more diverse than that, it's fn endless, and fulfilling!, kudos mark, but please do expand!
