Ghost hunting 101. As you film around the dark in a back and forth jerky motion it looks scary but we don't actually see anything. Its all the power of persuasion. Give us a little backstory like indian burial grounds and then have your player say a couple pre-recorded phrases like terrifying or go away, or help. After that you get jerkier with the camera to simulate nervousness. The final touch is to throw in a couple "what was that!? Shhh! "its over there"!) maybe throw in a twig snap or low growl and your bonafide!
