Well, we used to just trade things around, goods for goods, services for services, sometimes mixing and matching, but then it became hard to really trade and move around the stuff you're exchanging and also you aren't necessarily getting what you want, you just need it so you can trade it for the thing you actually want, I'm sure you know that trope. So basically people decided that instead of doing all that noise we should trade notes with the rough value of a certain amount of something valuable (grain when it was first invented, though in modern America it's a big ol' stash of gold) instead.
