When a horse feels threatened or uncomfortable, it may kick with its hind legs to defend itself. This can happen if another animal or person approaches too quickly or if the horse feels trapped.
Before kicking, horses often show warning signs such as folding their ears back, swinging their tail or lifting their hind legs. These behaviors indicate that the horse is agitated and may kick if the situation escalates.
A horse’s kick can be extremely powerful and potentially dangerous. Their hind legs are very strong and are capable of causing serious injury to other animals or humans. It is important to give horses plenty of space and approach them calmly and respectfully to avoid triggering a defensive reaction.
In herds, horses may also use kicks to establish dominance or maintain their position in the social hierarchy. Dominant mares may kick subordinate individuals to assert their power and maintain control of resources such as food and water.
Mares may also use kicks to protect their foals from perceived threats. They are fiercely protective of their offspring and will use their hooves to avoid potential dangers.
Proper training and handling is essential to manage your horse’s behavior and minimize the risk of aggression or defensive kicking. Through consistent training and positive reinforcement techniques, horses can learn to trust and respect their handlers, reducing the likelihood of aggressive behavior.

  1. first guy didnt care that his dog was being annoying and abusing the horse, and the guy who narrates says poor dog? seriously? poor horses!! they suffer whilst them dogs annoy them. stop feeling sorry for dogs when they litterally are a nuisance.

  2. As a lifelong martial artist, I can appreciate the power and timing of those horse kicks. The goal of an advanced karate kick, is to approximate the same pounds per square inch power of a horses back kick. Martial arts were developed by watching animals fight. It’s easy to see why a side kick or a spinning back kick, are the most powerful kicks in karate and how close the technique is to the horse. A kick from a horse will break your leg and a kick from a kareteka will do the same. If you block a kick with your forearm, that hasn’t been conditioned…it will shatter!
