Hippos are famous for their aggression, especially when their territory is violated. This territorial behavior is mainly observed in water, where they feel safest and most protected.
When an intruder (another hippo, animal, or human) enters the hippo’s territory, the dominant male usually gives warning signals. These include grunts, roars, and showing off their large, tusk-like fangs.
If the intruder does not retreat, the hippo will assume an aggressive posture. This involves opening the mouth wide to expose the teeth, a clear sign of aggression and a warning to back off.
If the warning is ignored, the hippo will charge at the intruder at incredible speeds for its size, reaching speeds of up to 30 km/h (about 19 mph) on land.
Underwater, hippos use their huge jaws and sharp teeth to bite, causing serious injury or death.
They can also use their large body weight to crush and trample intruders.
Although hippos are primarily herbivores, they will attack and kill predators such as lions, crocodiles, and hyenas if they feel threatened or if their young are in danger.

  1. Hippos can indeed be very dangerous and aggressive. Despite their somewhat docile appearance, they are considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. Hippos are highly territorial and can become very aggressive if they feel threatened. They have powerful jaws and sharp teeth, which they use to defend their territory and themselves. It's important to keep a safe distance from hippos in the wild to avoid provoking an attack.
