Spring runoff floods downtown Salt Lake City in 1983

Spread The Viralist

On May 28, 1983, the spring runoff that hit the rural parts of Utah finally made its way to the state’s capital, Salt Lake City.

During this time, residents were impacted by the newly formed “North Temple River,” businesses struggled to keep open, and local officials constructed temporary bridges to help with the rushing waters.

  1. Yup. That was the year that there was a mud slide in the moutains in Bountiful, Utah. It clogged a small pond that became larger, then suddenly gave way and came down the mountain in a 30-foot wave. About 3 houses were pushed off their foundations. A truck was pushed into a power station, causing all the lights to go out. Next, police cars were patrolling our streets, telling us to evacuate. My husband and I grabbed our 2 small kids, our dog and a basket of laundry. We had been keeping my brothers large dogs in a kennel in the back yard. We could not take them with us as they would hurt our little dog, so we let them out. We drove through mud and rocks to my parents house about 3 miles away. The next day we went back. 3 houses had their basements filled with mud. All the yards were covered with mud except for 6 yards. Only the garden of our yard was covered with mud. The dogs came back coverrd in mud. They had terrorized the neighborgood all night.

  2. I remember being a kid filling sand bags on top of the sand piles the city dumped in front of our houses on Ft. Union Blvd. and our parents were stacking the sandbags. It was crazy watching our street turn into a river! It was 3-4 feet deep raging down the whole street!
