The islands of the South Pacific are very remote, so any wildlife that manages to make it there must be able to travel long distances. Luckily, sooty terns are able to remain airborne for a whopping 4 years, and coconuts can travel for months at sea, meaning both species are common in French Polynesia.

Taken from ‘South Pacific’ (2009).
Unimaginably vast, the Pacific Ocean is 99% water and only 1% land – you could fit the whole of the world’s landmasses into it and still have enough room for another Africa! This landmark documentary series explores the sheer scale and majesty of the largest ocean on Earth, the isolation of its islands, the extraordinary journeys wildlife and humans have gone through to reach these specks of land, and what happened to both after their arrival.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you’ll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn’t get more exciting than this.

Fascinating!
That sounds like Benedict Cumberbatch.
How do you even test the bird to see how long it can fly ? I imagine a glass box with lawn mower blades spinning full speed under the bird . That’s pretty good motivation to fly
❤❤❤❤😊😊😊🎉🎉🎉🎉
Glad to see untouched land
How 4 years flying w/out landing & coconut migrating who was their secretary recording the timelines?
2:45 Not just „up to two months at sea“!
This has been studied at Oxford: a good third is still able to germinate after 110 days at sea!
What a place, possible only without human interfere!
Are they African swallows?
1:28,1:29,1:33 if the seeds arrive in the stomachs of the birds and the parent bird unknowingly regurgitates the seeds into the chicks, does the seed harms the chicks?
Im confused…. How are there fresh water reservoirs deep underground on an island in the middle of a salt water ocean?
This was a very chill short doc, but as informative as any other. Liked it a lot.
Umm seriously dude there's no way!!! That a bird can fly in the air for 4yrs w/out food/water impossible!! That statement you made is absolutely prosperous SMH! Guess you think ppl are stupid & gullible 🤔
Pingwings!

Both of them have nuts
Monty Python? 😂
Lovely coconuts, they even wash up on the gulf shores of Texas ❤
Nature sure is self- sustainable…..incredible !
Is that the African or the European?
just want to say, interesting!
This island is in which country
Where'd you find the coconuts?
so what after 3 years and 11 months the bird is just like 'oh this is it, I gotta sit down.'
I was so hoping this would involve swallows and coconuts.
excellent'
Holy grail!
Coconuts are a natural laxative. Something Gilligan never told us.
Four years without landing it’s unbelievable.
is that benedict?
