On June 24, 2024 Emilia Romagna, Italy Battered by Intense Thunderstorms and Flooding.
Unrelenting thunderstorms have pummeled the northern Apennines in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, causing widespread flooding and landslides. Areas between Modena and Reggio Emilia have been particularly hard-hit, with accumulated rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters in some locations.
The downpours have wreaked havoc, overflowing rivers and triggering landslides. In Pavullo nel Frignano, the Rio Bago River surged over its banks near Viale Martiri, isolating several houses. Further inland, the strong current of the Rossenna River destroyed a bridge in Prignano sulla Secchia, leaving residents stranded. Shocking footage circulating online shows floodwaters relentlessly tearing down bridges, highlighting the power of this natural disaster.
The situation isn’t limited to Pavullo and Prignano. Reports indicate landslides and flooding in Zocca, Montese, Fiorano, and Guiglia. The Secchia River has surpassed critical levels in Sassuolo, forcing the closure of the Ponte Veggia bridge as a precautionary measure.
Roads haven’t been spared either. Heavy rains triggered landslides and blocked access in Reggio Emilia.
