It sounds like the very best idea, but in this live I will talk about some real issues surrounding the “concept” of the NO KILL animal shelter.
This is a dangerous topic to tread into, but I am really tired of innicent people and dogs getting hurt and dogs being played for money.
This will be an eye opener, I promise!

Thank you for this conversation. Truth.
Robert, love all that you do help dogs and handler/owners around the world. So, so sorry to hear about Maya and Goofy. We never get enough time with them, but since we hold onto the incredible memories we made with them they live in our hearts forever. This was a great topic to discuss, and we totally agree. Save the 4 dogs and let the 5th go instead of being a hero and trying to save the 1 but let 4 go.
I’ll name them so everyone can research it: Best Friends Animal Society.
I WILL SAY IT! PETA, ASPCA AND A VARIETY OF RESCUES. ROBERT HAS MENTIONED THAT THERE ARE FOUR IN PARTICULAR BESIDES MANY RESCUES WHAT OTHER ORGANIZATIONS WAS HE REFERRING TO? I HAVE A FEW GUESSES.
Robert's shelter dog trainer course is GREAT by the way. Highly recommend!
I am not trying to nay say here but Leo Grillo who founded D.E.L.T.A never adopts his dogs out. One of his principles. He keeps them for life. He creates adobe kennels for a pair of dogs that love each other. Large areas fir the two to live in together. It works for him and I applaud his dedication.
Excellent video and I agree 💯 so sorry to hear about your girl. 😢
A lot of shelters network and really work hard to find them homes, or specific breed homes. You know nothing.
I shared your channel with my cousin . Her dog is a rescue from Texas. She was shipped up to Canada for her. She’s had the dog 2 years. Very nice dog but has some issues. I was watching her with the dog yesterday and I thought she should watch you.
Muy buen video teacher. Gracias
You are an honest guy and your explanations make perfect sense and logic. All shelters are no kill and children are dying in Turkey. I suggest everyone here to listen to you.
Can I get a summary of his position?
I'm assuming it's something like: some dogs are too damaged and cannot be trained to be reintegrated into society.
I'm curious about his thoughts, but it's not a subject I care to watch a long-form video on.

Our local no-kill shelter cannot take healthy, adoptable animals because all of their available space and resources are being used to take care of the unadoptable ones. God bless ‘em,they have a cabin for cats that are FIV +. When a FIV kitty was dumped on my property, mercifully they were able to make room for him — but it isn’t only the shelters that are a problem. The vets insisted that they would not euthanize an FIV+ cat because it was “healthy”, as far as they are concerned. They expected me to keep him and expose all my other cats to the virus. He was a sweet kitty, but there was no way I was exposing my healthy cats to FIV.
This is a very important topic and I don't believe many people know the facts you just stated. Opened my eyes for sure.
Thanks for your video, I am informed on something I was not aware of.
Actually a no kill means that only up to 10% of the dogs are put down. I stopped Listening to this video because it is pure populism. Maybe, you should try to do a video of how shelters kill good dogs for space – that would be actually useful. Also, every bite history is different – one dog bit because someone try to take his food away from him (not ideal but doesn’t mean that the dog is a bad dog), others are dangerous and bite because they were raised wrong. People need to mention details of the bite. One volunteer actually said that she took a shelter puppy out for a walk and he bit her because he was overly excited. Not a bad bite but the shelter put him down. Do you think it is fair?
Anyways, stop throwing people populist ideas.
Worked for a shelter that went from a no kill to a kill shelter. The hardest part was getting the same staff to get on board with who needed to be euthanized. I, being the shelter manager, would actually take dogs to my personal house, just to make room, so we wouldn't have to euthanize. In the end, because, when we had room at the shelter for the dogs we took to our personal homes could now be safely placed, my husband said, yeah, he's not going anywhere; it eventually became not fair to me, my husband, or my current dogs in the house. Was the animal control officer and luckily had a great relationship with our go to humane society, and could just call her to say, yeah, police wouldn't do anything about the dog, same dog from a week ago running loose, actually launched at my face – woman, no uniform. The manager said, yeah, it was time, no rehabilitating this one. Hope that helps.
I’m not even a dog owner but I do like dogs. Absolutely brilliant analysis of the dog situation in the world today. An absolute tragedy. Thank you for everything you do Robert.
best way to help a dog in a shelter financially is to go to that shelter and sponsor whatever dog is there if you don't want to adopt/volunteer but still help (i think) rather than blindly send money to a faceless group
I agree. my daughter volunteered at a big shelter near Philly. She too got caught up with a cute little bullterrier mix. It was just returned. Not able to get along with owner's other dog. Things were going good for about a week. Fight broke out over a toy with my daughters first dog. My daughter got her hands bit. Ok no toys. Three weeks later I came out for a visit. Again, In the morning a fight broke out. We had to lift the two dogs by their collars and chock them to get them to release. They seemed to be fine and reintroduced them. Later that night my grandson was on the couch with one of the dogs. The other dog laid on the floor in front of the couch. It raised its head and the other attacked. Again, we had to lift both dogs by their collars and chock them. This time blood and damage to both dogs. She returned it to the shelter. Again, they adopted it out. With a warning single dog home only. NUTS!!!!
Thank you for making so much sense of all of this and it is so very true. Thank you for being upfront about a very real problem that is going on everywhere. God bless you.
Thank you for this video and what you do…
👏👍👏👍 THANK YOU for saying the "hard thing" that needs to be said. Also, thank you for not being one if the content creators who count on baiting people with slanderous or malicious statements to promote your views.
I am sooooo very sorry for the unspeakable pain of losing your dog while dealing with the indescribably difficult health if your mother. Many many heartfelt prayers over your entire family and support team.❤
Most of the dogs taking spaces up in shelters, objectively, are several of the most popular bully breeds (or mixes with these breeds) and it is no surprise why that is. There are dogs who could use those places who would be adopted very quickly. I’m so sorry for so many nice dogs out there.
Another good discussion
You're in my thoughts, Robert
Very Difficult topic to talk about. When my Lab passed, I went to several Shelters where I live (Canada) to adopt. I was denied by all shelters due to being a single. Male. They wanted their dogs to go to families. I have resources to care for a companion, References from neighbors and my vet, flex work schedule. I ended up purchasing a sick dog from Kijiji and nursed him back to health.
Very good video. All of what you said is so true . I put my 14 yr old Maia gsd about the same time you did your Maia, and yes it hurts .
I can't believe I heard this today. I was that volunteer that thought I could "save" him 😢 I kept him for a year and a half. He was a challenge but I did everything I could to give him everything he probably NEVER had in his 2 years of age. I new there was something not right but kept an eye on him ALL the time. The shelter tried to tell me, I wouldn't listen Where I'm going here… 6/12/24 I gave in to BE. thankfully, before my decision nothing "too" serious happened to myself or my other dog. Our last few months together was stressful but we made it work. I'm alone so they were both in my hands for care only. I don't regret recusing him or my choice to save him through BE but I am broken and had to stop volunteering for a bit. I am HEAR EVERY word here ! Loud and clear I wish more people would understand this… I'm debating sharing this video but I feel it's so controversial and hate that attention but lord I now understand 😔
It's sounds very much like the philosophy of some of the big dog food manufacturers who have starting buying up private vet practices so they can then turn around and then dictate to the vets what products/meds to use to treat the patients. Very unethical in my mind. Thank you for calling these organizations out. You are a voice of reason, Robert.
There are certainly dogs that should not be in society and there are also humans that should not be in society yet we try to rehabilitate them.
Its sad, but behavioral and medical euthanasia does have a place. If a dog is unable to control itself, its not living well, and needs constant medication and supervision for their own well being, its not living well. For a organization with limited funding to try and adopt out that dog, is a money pit that will likely end badly and cost other adoptable dogs a chance. Even if the dog bit someone in self defense, their are still a hundred other dogs that did no do that. It is called triage to try and save as many as you can based on their need. In this case that would mean biters, and true aggression dont make the cut. Its sad, no one likes to see a dog lose its life. But no one would want to sacrifice 4 or 5 other dogs that could have been adopted out if that time and money was spent on them. We cant save everyone, people who want to have beautiful hearts but we just cant do it
I volunteered for many years at a large shelter that was "no kill" in principle, but actually had a policy of not putting dogs up for adoption that would not be a safe companion for the adopter. Our euthanasia rule was if the dog was medically uncurable or lethally dangerous they would be put down. We would work with our dogs and try to correct any behavior problems that could be fixed prior to adoption. Amen to your presentation.
Hi Robert, so sorry to hear about Maya. I bet Goofy misses her. Are there any organizations that you can recommend? And, I totally love and agree with your position. I HOPE that your message reaches the people that can make a difference. Appreciate everything you do. Thank YOU!
You made a lot of sense
I worked with a dog – three significant bites on his record. Went after neighbor kids (good with his family kids) but also bit dad when he came home from deployment and bit the uncle when he was playing with the kids. Owners surrendered him to the local humane society. The VERY NEXT DAY they had him up for adoption. The VERY NEXT DAY. I was certain they would put him down. They didn’t even get to know him! He was a Beautiful Aussie Cattle dog mix. Irresponsible and dangerous of the shelter to adopt him out immediately.
❤❤❤❤❤❤HI ROBERT,
THIS IS GOING TO BE AN INCREDIBLE VIDEO FOR MANY REASONS. THE REASON I DO NOT LIKE NO KILL SHELTERS IS WHY MAKE A DOG A GOOD DOG SPEND YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR IN A PRISON, OR A CAGE ON CEMENT WITH MAYBE A PAD WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THAT? I HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD THAT I WOULD RATHER PUT A DOG DOWN THEN MAKE HIM SO SAD AND SO DESPERATELY LOOKING TO GET OUT OF THE CAGE AND GET A HOME TO GET HUMAN CONTACT. PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND THAT ASPECT OF IT NOW I'M NOT THROUGH WITH THE VIDEO AND MAYBE YOU WILL GET THERE BUT NO KILL AND THEN YOU GO IN AND THAT DOG HAS NOT BEEN ADOPTED AND BEEN THERE FOR 6 YEARS TO ME THAT'S TORTURE A KIND OF TORTURE FOR A DOG THAT WE DON'T UNDERSTAND. I KNOW IT SOUNDS MEAN BUT I WOULD RATHER THAT DOG BE PUT DOWN BECAUSE IT'S JUST UNADOPTABLE FOR SOME WEIRD REASON MAYBE IT'S UGLY TO PEOPLE WHO KNOWS IT DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE LOCKED UP FOREVER.
