Whenever Norm told a joke that didn’t go over very well with the main audience, I think he still got enjoyment out of it because he knew that the fans who were on his same page would find it especially hilarious; knowing that it was never meant to go over with the main audience.Those were the fans that Norm actually cared about.
People such as Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, and especially Jimmy Fallon had (at best) a small fraction of Norm’s comedic genius. Despite that, they went on to earn millions of dollars. I always appreciated that Norm stayed true to the craft rather than sell out to mediocrity to appease network executives, sponsors, or cater to those afraid of offending even a single person.
