OSAKA, JAPAN – Osaka is a Japanese food capital, and along with eating lots of Japanese street food during my time there, I also wanted to check out a few of the best Japanese restaurants.

Here are the restaurants I visited:

Maruyoshi Sushi (https://maps.app.goo.gl/6MxagNxBnC7DMa616) – Located at a morning market in Osaka, this restaurant serves the freshest fish you can imagine. There are two famous places next to each other, so I chose the less famous option. Their mixed kaisen don including an assortment of seafood over rice, was fantastic. Price – 2,750 JPY ($17.10)

Kadoya Shokudo (https://maps.app.goo.gl/USV6e3qzjTq9yQvf7) – Next up on this Japanese food tour in Osaka I went to one of the highest rated ramen restaurant, known especially for their Tsukemen, or dipping ramen. I think I got lucky with the line! Price – 2,500 JPY ($15.54)

Honke Shibato (https://maps.app.goo.gl/3e5tJc8iKau3hXvSA) – To say this restaurant is an institution is an understatement! They’ve been open for over 300 years and still run by the 15th generation. Their unagi, eel, is among the best I’ve had in Japan. Price – 8,870 JPY ($55.15) per dish

Namba Okonomiyaki Ajinoya Honten (https://maps.app.goo.gl/evhY6vpmfgNogHP59) – One of the signature Japanese dishes of Osaka is okonomiyaki, and I specifically wanted to come here because it’s an original shop that’s been open since 1965 and 4 generations, that’s still family run. Price – 8,200 JPY ($52.84) for everything

If you love food and Japanese food, Osaka is an eating paradise. This is just a start of the countless delicious restaurants to try in Osaka!

  1. Extra question Mark! You have travelled all over Asia and India, and far beyond. What is the best-tasting beer you have had in Asia? I have tried a few and so far prefer Tsingtao, but it was established by Germans, and tastes like it.

  2. Sorry to say this but Japanese food does not look appetizing at all. Is it because people from South Asia and SE Asian countries have more spices in their food?

  3. Excellent as always. I think I've seen a behind the scenes video of that unagi restaurant. It looks so good that I wished I liked eel… or any seafood for that matter. The noodles with the black pork soup was definitely right up my ally. That would be a regular stop for me. As for the okonomiyaki… I do like it, but I have to be picky and I do make it at home. There's a huge Asian market nearby to buy the ingredients. That one did have a lot of batter, but that is great. I like both noodles and cabbage, but I use a lot of pork belly instead of squid or shrimp, and no bonito flakes on top (again, hate seafood.) So, yeah, not liking seafood and trying to eat in Japan would be a challenge I suppose. I'd have to do some searching for restaurants, but otherwise I do like the flavors and styles of Japanese food. Maybe it is why I gravitated more towards Korean food. My uncle lived in Osaka for about 8 years, 40 years ago, and he still speaks very fondly of it and the food.

  4. i wonder if it's good to eat out of a lacquered box? I noticed the inside is lacquered too…. just curious , maybe it's no worse than we put everything in plastic in the west. Japan probably uses natural lacquers

  5. Yumm😋. This episode has my cravings for sashimi, Maruyoshi sushi, & Shokudo ramen activated. If you ever had authentic Japanese cuisine you know Mark is consuming some of the best of the best flavors your taste buds will ever experience. The sushi bowl is a delightful way to start your day with fresh candy looking tuna. That Shokudo ramen looks so delicious & satisfying by far a premium version for sure. However, the 300 year-old restaurant Honke Shibato is so fine, clean, & elegant honoring decades of excellence is definitely something highly valued and considered a landmark. Overall, Mark has a Madis touch for such iconic destinations to treat your palate!! Love this Osaka tour!! Kudos to Mark for displaying this epic content!! Thanks Mark!! Wishing you & family, friends safe travels always and many more blessings my friend!! Cheers!!🍲🍜🍥🍵🍶

  6. OMG I'd love that! So jealous. We tried some of your recommendations in Stockholm and actually stayed at the Courtyard Marriott you did since it was close to friends. The shrimp and salmon at Anderson's were spectacular.
