Chapo Trap House: The Complete Megan McArdle Saga [Reading Series Compilation]
Spread The Viralist

Megan McArdle is a legend within the Chapo-verse for her wild and often unbelievable libertarian hot takes. Particularly during Chapo’s early years, Megan popped up again and again – much to Matt’s chagrin. This compilation combines all (to the editor’s knowledge) Megan McArdle reading series into one digestible 5 hour video. Please like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoy!

  1. McGriddle’s analogy to cars driving (I think that may be a classic libertarian talking point, which would be even more baffling, but not 100% sure about that one) is so braindead. Like, she acknowledges the side of that coin which is convenient to her… Yes, we could drive 10 miles an hour & it would be safer. And it’s not even true that people couldn’t necessarily get to work on time— you’d just have to leave for work absurdly early. In any case, that’s one side of that. We can’t just make endless sacrifices in the name of safety, because there are other considerations to balance against it… But she ignores the flip side of that, which is pretty obvious if you think about it for 10 seconds… We already DO limit our speed to 45, or 50, or 60, or 70, or whatever, depending on the roads you’re using to commute to work… We COULD just floor it & drive to work at 130… But, weird, it’s almost like there’s some reason we don’t do that (& in fact have legislated some kind of standard for what speeds are acceptable on what roads to prevent those of us who have very bad judgement from trying to do so & endangering everyone around them)… Because the argument actually goes in both directions— there are factors you have to balance on both sides in order to come to a decent conclusion. It’s not enough to JUST say “fuck safety” or “fuck being able to make it more than 10 miles in an hour under optimal traffic.” You actually have to take all our needs into consideration & balance them in some way. The way she is arguing, you’d think we have no speed limit & that she literally does drive 110 everywhere she goes, because guess what… You WOULD get to work sooner that way… Until the day you slam into another car, or run a red light & get T-boned, or fly off a highway overpass when the turn is too tight for that speed. But requiring people to turn off their brains & forget half the equation is the name of her entire ideological grift.
