Ricoh GR IIIX is highly successful and has gained a cult following among street photographers. The formula is simple – small compact form factor with APS-C sized image sensor and a fixed versatile lens. However it is also not cheap – at about USD1000 that is a little out of reach for lower income earners. The good news is, there are cheaper alternatives, and I am exploring this old Sony NEX-6 + TTArtisans 27mm F2.8 AF combo which costs less than USD200!

  1. Been using the NEX-6 along side my A7RII for a long time now and it's a remarkable little piece of kit. I used it to photograph a solar eclipse and it pulled through like a champ ❤

  2. My cheap Ricoh GR replacement are a simple EOS M and Panasonic GF1. Higher up, I also use a DP3 Merill and DP2 Quattro. I'll never sell my Ricoh GRII with its incredible pop-up flash, but it feels good to change systems from time to time and be able to link a certain camera model to a certain trip. The pleasure of working with older cameras and taking your time instead of snap shooting at random things also makes the experience of "older" cameras more enjoyable.

  3. I really greatly agree.
I've been using all of GR's products for a long time, from GRD to GR2, and GX100, GX200, and GXR. However, the recent high prices and overheating of GR3 and GR3X have made me a GR enthusiast find another alternative. It's better enough on camera in a decade or so, and there are many different alternatives.

  4. Robin ..I loved the comparison .. ( I upgraded my Olympus to the OM5 with the pro wide) …at 7:39 a beautiful green bug shows on the Sony …I was expecting this to be a segway into another one of your fabulous macro videos … cheers Robin / Nick

  5. Literally just fixed my Nex – 6 recently. (Broken screen and sticky dial). Currently using it with adapted vintage lenses and has been a joy to use.

  6. I usually shoot with a Fuji XT30 which is pretty compact. I bought the pancake lens but even then it wasn't what I would deem as pocketable. Thought about my use case and re-bought my old Lumix LX10/15 – which I love. Although, the 1inch sensor maybe scoffed at by some, that doesn't effect it's day time use and it's f1.4 with outstanding results. For evening where you can afford to be less candid, I love my FujiFilm 35mm f1.4 lens. I was put off by the lack of tilt on the GRIII and it's f2.8

  7. Wow, the images/color is stunning. I also have that TTartisan lens, and it is a very good and sharp lens. I got it for compactness. The photos of all the fruit makes my mouth water.

  8. The GR & x100 are just cult cameras for clueless photographs who want to jump on a bandwagon. So many better options like this, also consider the 5100 with 24MP sensor – smaller, lighter but no EVF.

  9. I wish with all the different camera combinations that I could find one to rule them all. The sony A6500 came close, but among other things it doesn't have a selfie screen or fast flash sync speed. For that I end up using my Nikon d70s or P7800. There is the G9 for 10bit video and ibis, D810 for pixel count, sensor and dynamic range. Casio ex-z750 for size; I don't always want a zoom lens to slow startup though. G85 for unlimited video time. Z6 for autofocus in a fullframe. Em5 and em5 mkii for because I got a good deal. A lot of overlap. If the Canon G1x had a better viewfinder and no extending lens that would be cool. I know my list of needs/wants is unfair……I would like to get rid of some cameras and just have the one tool.

  10. Honestly a GX85 or better yet a GX9 with a 20mm is the most powerful combo for not a whole lot of money. And there are little to no compromises, it does have a good EVF, tilt one, it does have amazing stabilization you can shoot up to 1 second hand held with this combo, it does have amazing video (though cropped by 1.2x) it does have a screen that’s better than anything from Sony even today, it can really be used in daylight, and it tilts, and while this combo has slower autofocus, this is the most precise autofocus you’ll ever use, trust me. It will never miss focus when it confirms green.
