After Rita, Dexter should NOT have been in any type of serious relationship… The whole point to Dexter and the show was how much he needed a "cover" to function in everyday normal life. Putting him in relationships with other killers, defeated the purpose..
The bromance with Miguel… is exactly how all his relationships should have been… Dexter figuring out he really is different from anyone he comes in contact with.. Doesn't matter if they kill or not… He cannot connect with them, as he is always in an inner struggle with himself… He wants to be normal but can't/ Because of this, he can't be w/ another killer either because it goes again Harry's code…
That is the complexity of DEXTER.. "Can't live with them, can't live without them"
Dexter could still have character growth, without the need for a love interest/ sidekick for longer than a few eps within the seasons. Long term or happy endings is so unrealistic for the character of a serial killer.. Had this been a comedy show, then yes that works because of the setting. It's silly it's a comedy.. However, this was a drama w/ comedic elements (Dexter's inner voice was hilarious).
After Rita's death Dexter should have kept with the "I can't have a normal life, but I have to try" So he enters relationships even more shut off than the last.. Opening up just a bit with every romantic/sidekick encounter. Which could have also blead into his relationship with Deb… Having her become more suspicious of him and his actions… All this romance crap was so getting on my last nerves… Like where is Dexter at??
How can you forget Lumen
In all honesty, I would have preferred her finding out over Debra. She should have never died.

The only ones I accept are Rita and Lumen. Lila was crazy and Hannah is just sort of… there. Plus she fit the code and even got away from Dexter’s table for being idk hot? I guess. 💀

Rita was his link to normalcy and being a good father.
Lumen had an ‘I-got-your-back’, teacher-apprentice type of friendship that turned into pure love. But she only needed him for her revenge plan, and didn’t wanna keep any darkness beyond that.
Hannah was an equal who could exist long term in Dexter’s both worlds.

Dexter's relationship with Rita is still the best by far. The rest felt forced imho. His connection with Rita was built up over a few seasons and their relationship added a lot more to the show too with the kids + hiding his secreet
Lumen and Hannah sucked!
My favorite relationship was Dexter's with Lumen. If they had stayed together who knows the possibilities.
