It almost sounds like a cheap sound effect but if you pay attention to the timing of the growl and his glances, they don't line up or make sense. Which leads me to believe that it's not a dog growl. ALSO the growl doesn't really sound like a dogs growl in general. It's something about it that just doesn't sound right, doesn't sound like a dog at all. Almost sounds like some kind of humanoid growl
