Madagascar is one of the most unique and fascinating countries in the world, and when it comes to the food, it’s unlike anywhere else. Today we’re in the capital city, Antananarivo, a bustling city where you’ll find some of the best Madagascar street food in the country. We’re eating everything we can from morning to night, 14 hours on this ultimate Malagasy street food tour!

Thank you to Michael, Coco, Andry (https://madagascar-discovery.com/), and Mario for taking me around on this ultimate Madagascar street food tour!

6 AM – We’re starting this Madagascar street food tour with vary amin’anana – Malagasy rice and greens porridge that’s eaten almost daily. Along with the porridge you also get dozens of meats, proteins, sausage, and beans. We then continued walking around the bustling and colorful morning market, and tried things like kola nut, numbing flowers, and coffee.

Zebu – You can’t come to Madagascar without trying Zebu, the local cattle breed, and the meat is so flavorful and natural. We washed it down with fresh ginger sugarcane juice.

Looks Ny Maraina – One of the greatest meals you have to eat when you’re in Madagascar is called looks, or pig face. Along with rice, some extra side dishes like Zebu and a fiery hot chili sauce, it was an awesomely tasty meal.

Le Bord D’Ambohipo – Dinner and late night, we’re at a restaurant stall known around the city for their Malagasy bbq. We’ll try all the different skewers, from shrimp and calamari, to zebu beef, and a giant grilled fish. What I also really loved were all the sauces, salads, and side dishes.

This was my very first time in Madagascar and it was an unbelievable introduction to the incredible and unique Malagasy street food in Antananarivo.

  1. The south East Asian and African diaspora’s are so beautifully represented in this video. What a beautiful people, culture and food!
I see some Indian and West Indian similarities as well.

  2. This was great! I saw Andrew Zimmern's episode of Bizarre Foods and it seemed rather primitive and depressing. Sonny Side (Best Ever Food Review Show) visited there as well, and similarly depressing You've shown it in a far different light. Seems the capital city is far more modern than I'd have thought. Nicely done Mark!
