Milo was a pregnant stray dog living near the border of Arizona and Mexico when someone found her and brought her to Sunshine Dog Rescue. Her puppies were born premature and none of them survived. As she searched frantically for her babies, her rescuers came up with an idea to make her heart whole again.

My heart broke seeing her carry the toy. Then it was so sweet seeing her quickly get into nursing position when the kittens arrived. She knew from smelling them what they needed. This is a sweet story.❤❤
I'm 76 from Northern Ontario and worked summer months in Southern Ontario on my Uncle's Sheep Farm. It was not unusual to see Cats nursing Rabbits and Boarder Collies nursing Kittens.

it does not matter, most female animals that have lost their babies are generallly open to adopting animals from a different species. Especially when they are VERY young.
Oxytocin is a powerful hormone.
I had a cow once that added a garbage can to her mothering accomplishments. She tried nursing that garbage can for weeks.
The dog definitely knew the kittens weren't her babies, but she was in mommy mode and wanted to care for the young and she was happy to be given the chance to raise the kitties
