    when queen ant dies
When a queen ant dies, the entire colony usually dies as well:

    No reproduction
The queen's main role is to reproduce, so without her, the colony can't grow. Worker ants can't reproduce, so they'll eventually die off.

    No direction
The queen provides direction for the workers who collect food. Without her, the colony becomes disorganized and dies off.

    No successor
If there's no replacement queen, the colony will die off. However, some ant species have multiple queens, and in these cases, worker ants will kill all but one.

    Time
It can take weeks, months, or years for the colony to fully die off. The population size of the colony affects how long it takes.

In some species, like Indian jumping ants, the workers will fight each other to become the new queen. The winners of these tournaments become pseudoqueens, or gamergates, and take on new roles.
