Did Milwaukee's New Streetcar make it Better?
Spread The Viralist

Last year, the L-Line in Milwaukee opened. This is the second line of the Hop, a free downtown streetcar service connecting different destinations in Milwaukee. The new branch is very short, but does it address the fundamental issues that the Hop faces?

  1. It's not puzzling why it's not busy. The buildings stores are clearly still under construction and your visiting a transit stop in a heavily outdoors focused tourist section of milwaukee (i.e., summerfest grounds and large lake front parks) in late October/early November well past peak tourist season for the region. I don't know about you but I don't go stand by lake Michigan in the winter much lol 🥶

  2. I would think the major destination for the new L line is Summerfest. It gets nuts down there those weeks. Plus the museums are worthy enough as well

  3. This is the same rolling stock as the QLine in Detroit, isn’t it? It’s such a shame because they’re super nice inside but (at least in Detroit, haven’t tried this) it practically feels less convenient than just hopping on a bus on Woodward.

  4. There's a difference when it comes to a urban city and a suburban/ rural area One is more publicly accessible and the other one is private car accessible, and I think our politician's aka Republican come from a suburban, rural mindset when it comes to cities. which they are totally different a suburb does not have to deal with excessive traffic as much as a city does and also relying on cars to get around is a disaster but if you give people options like the hop and expanded to key places you can reduce trafficking on city streets.

  5. it's always the same in America. U make a garbage rail oriented public transit system and then the politicians have what is needed to ban any public transit system proposals in the future. In every project there are enough positive points that lets you know we could build the type of transit that would be very successful – the economics behind the auto industry (personal owned automobiles) is just to powerful for railways to contend with because cars work so well with urban sprawl and those systems working in tandem generate far more taxes than public transit ever will!!!

  6. If we’re going to fantasize about extending the L line northeast from Burns Common, let’s bring it up in a direct line via N Farwell Ave and then N Maryland Ave instead. The catchment areas of stops (even the university stop at the end!) would include many more potential destinations than if the line was extended closer to the lake, and the more direct alignment means shorter travel times to/from the university.

Also, what’s up with the slow speed of the trams in the video and others I’ve seen? I’m not from America and we don’t have that kind of patience for mass transit where I’m from. I suspect you have more political sabotage going on than is apparent to most.

  7. Trump will be President for the next four years. No more Federal matching funds for transit projects because Trump and Republicans hate spending money on transit. Maybe after two years assuming the Democrats retake the House and Senate during the midterms, which is likely. But definitely not before the then.

  8. The HOP could be great if not for state Republicans sabotaging the city. They withold funding and then say "see their broke" yes you caused that. If it went further, it would be great

  9. I'm a Republican, but I definitely don't agree with those politicians that don't want to fund rail travel! I'm in Ohio and the Governor before our current one, I voted for him but then his first speech after he got in office he said he would not authorize funding to build a light rail from Cincinnati to Cleveland! I was NOT happy with him for that! I think a lot of these politicians have their hands in the pockets of the oil companies and building train service contradicts that! But trains do need to go where people are going. Cincinnati has one of those what seems to be a worthless street car. We don't want that, either!

  10. Enjoyed your analysis and commentary. A bit off-topic, but can we please find another name for these train stations other than "Intermodal"? Blah. I get it: the bus lines come here too. They also probably go to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. How about "Milwaukee Station"? Hmm?

  11. The hop is a complete waste of taxpayer money and should have never been built. Nobody rides it anymore. It was a fad when it first came out and now is a bust.
