Prefight indicators: Grooming, Glancing, Hands, Blading/Weight shift. You need to be aware at all times.
Learning self defence in virtual reality where you get heavily penalized for failure might get rid of a lot of these issues!!!!
I got hit over the back of the head with a weapon on holiday just over a week ago. The guy didn't look like a threat and I didn't care they were behind me. I was instantly knocked out and robbed. I've had a concussion and dizziness since it happened, and while it could of been worse, it definitely has taken a mental toll on me aswell
where could we watch the full clips
Situational awareness in approx 80% of self defence
Katoooo…?! 🕵️🥷
Once again, vital information and straightforward advice. Another outstanding video!
The BIGGEST, making the most difference? Letting someone "inside" or within range to strike you, and you not acting first, immediately, once they break distance. I have seen more lose the fight to this that shouldn't have won, and more win the fight, that shouldn't have lost. It will ALWAYS be the most important factor. That and No.2…Know how to follow up.
True and scary
Speed. Surprise. Violence of action.
another really well done segment!
Many fights happen on mass transit.
Best commentary I've seen from you so far.
The surprise attack is the worst. Always be aware of your surroundings & don't count any sinaro out. Lol.im called paranoid alot but it keeps me safe.
This is huge. So huge I don’t think a simple 7 minute video does this justice. This should one of the main points in self defense training. Thank you for this video!
Man brotha , I watched. You as a kid , I just came back to your channel , I an mma fighter , had war of fights in cage and i work as bouncer and it is still so different in street , I came back to your videos because I just had 5 people jump me at work or try to as I was removing them and moment I angled off is when they swung they missed the face and got shoulder but you cannot prepare for something like that, thankfully my IQ was above theirs and i got two of their guys good which pulled the others away but i really trying to work on that now , because that was very very different and I was in middle of it and thankfully no weapons were involved or pulled , but what you say is undeniably true,
I’ve said it in the last post I’ll say it again if you allow anybody within arms reach of you,u already made a mistake
1) in a bar bus or restaurant, always have your back against the wall because then you won't have anyone coming from behind,
Also face the door do you know who's coming and who's going so it's special awareness
2) walking down the street, always looking in car mirrors, shop windows or house windows,
Get to know where your exits are making sure that they're not dead ends,
Always be aware of what's behind you and in front of you, space awareness is key in this area
Nice job – to help you in the algorithm.
One of the strangest methods of surprise attack I personally came across in my younger days is someone grabbing your shoulder to spin you around to face them just in time for a clobber, giving anyone with an ounce of training enough time to defend themselves during that turn.
Even with out-of-control emotions, the first sign is silence. It can happen fast, so try to maintain the distance at all times. They don't have a gun (or no firearm training) if they are that close. But they can have a knife or something smaller, handheld, and swift. If they in arms reach, they can do harm, but also, so can you.
Sports martial artists have a day/date/time to prepare for, most attacks are kinda “random”, the element of surprise is a major factor.
This philosophy is absolutely correct. In order to defend yourself, you must be willing to inflict pain and damage to the person or persons who are attacking you.
I live in one of the worst boroughs of London with high crime rates, I can walk the streets 4am in the morning without being ambushed. I agree how you train in the gym is not how you will be able to fight and defend yourself. The truth is the aggressor will always attack you, when your on your own and hes with his mates and your tired, weak and vulnerable and at a disadvantage, its cowardly. To be honest the people you think will attack you, won't and the ones that you think wont attack you, they will – its certain people. Theres a lot of strange, weird and dangerous people in London, be vigilant everyone! Also most of these predators are the younger people and also in some situations it is hate crime.
Again this guys channel is so useful and he speaks the truth!
Im an alleycat on a bicycle in the City of Chicago… Im a shark… you cant get behind me… too quick… 😂 i swim around the cumbags in Chitowns loop… 😢 Wish i could give them a meal.
Always solid advice and analyses. Thanks Mark.
Great video! I tell my students these ideas all the time. Thanks for sharing.
4m12s – so Inspector Clouseau was right all along! I need to hire a house servant.
I have been trained to have a defensive mind set; that is, set boundaries on how close a person can get to my danger zone.
Moving away from a possible problem is always a good idea and it can give insight into whether or not to use a defensive side kick, turn kick or defensive reverse punch or weapons.
I learned so much in my training about self defense however the best training I could have received was prior to my training when I was a big mouth young punk and got into lots of street fights. The most important thing I learned from those days in bar fights is that you will get hit and you will get hurt and in some cases almost killed and anything goes. Broken glass, knives, guns, chairs, anything goes. Now I’m older and much wiser and avoid those situations but until you have actually been in a real fight where people are trying to really hurt you or even kill you do you realize how quickly things can escalate and get out of control. Another great video.
Having served in the military and of course carried out weapons training, i think we should be able to carry firearms legally here in the UK for self defence. I know that might rattle a few peoples feathers, but the old days of manners and being respectable are past us. Violence is on the rise around the World along with anti social behaviour. Western societies are becoming more narcissistic and inward looking, with individuals who are increasingly communicating more through violence. Recent figures show that as many as 1 in 5 young males here in the UK are high in psychopathy, and the stats for female psychopathy is higher than previously thought. The UK Police have for a few decades now, slowly withdrawn from the "bobby on the beat" style policing and the protection of citizens (a fact noted by the likes of Chris Ryan etc) and massive amounts of crime is simply now not being investigated, turning many areas into crime ridden dystopian hotspots, ruled by young men (and older) who have no father figure, have been bought up in chaos and so become hyper masculine and or have narcissistic injury of other types of personality disorders, which can make them very dangerous (i am not painting all people with personality disorders with the same brush, but we have to be real here) I have trained Martial Arts and i totally get that street fights are very different than what goes down in the local dojang, but if you pull out a fire arm, are well trained and responsible, the violent damaged scumbag on the other end will learn a very important lesson on life preservation.
Would love to see you on the Ultimate Self Defence Championship!
I think you'd do great tbh!
After form competition, we bow and back up never turn you back on the judges . This is how to Back away from trouble .
There's almost no substitute for experience here. Suppose one of the few advantages of growing up in a poorer area. Never, Never Nerve let someone closer that an arm and a half. Never. if a 2nd tries to circle behind you, the fight is on.
You do a good job of telling the mentality! Where attackers desire home court advantage as well as a safety net!
😁
I believe this talk and explanation has moved into your "TOP 3" videos. #WELLSAID
Excellent video! Two things I may add are , first always make sure your back is not exposed, that means the brick or concrete wall might be your friend if your back is to it and not only because it means there's no potential aggressor there, but also anyone who comes at you with enough force can test how hard that particular wall is with whatever they are coming at you with. Second thing is everyone has "soft tissue". Don't go for the face or head or chest, go for the neck or the groin area. If they have a belly go at it from the side/oblique. I think you might have said it, I heard it somewhere, be aware of someone with their chin down or shoulders up, because they're trying to protect that soft spot. Also assume when going for someone's neck, that they will be fast enough to block your thrust and be ready to "touch" their temple or ribs or groin.
Real fights faster than Bruce Lee movies, dont think so.
Outstanding video, a lot of people walk around with their heads in the clouds! Always be aware of your surroundings!
Exactly it’s your mind changing!
I’m 71 years old, I grew up in East L.A. always fighting, fat wee Ladd at that time!
When your out and about, eyes open!
De-escalate is a great key, until pushed.
We evolved from fish, we didn't evolve from reptiles, there is no reptilian brain.
Carry OC spray, keep it ready.
Dr. Phillips, you present some excellent advice for today's real world situations.
You also have a very calm, intelligent, and professional demeanor and style that encourages people to connect with what you say!
I trained in Krav Maga for about a year, however, that has been years ago. I chose Krav Maga back then because I felt it was closer to street fighting than other martial arts. But, you take Krav Maga to a whole new level of awareness and self defense.
I'm in my seventies now, but still watch your videos regularly. There is always some nugget of knowledge to take away even at my age.
Thank you for all your videos…
