  5. Yes, tegu lizards are known to carry salmonella:

    Prevalence
    A study of 30 captive-born tegu lizards found that 100% of them carried salmonella, with 87% of samples testing positive.

    Resistance
    The study also found that 82% of the isolates were resistant to sulfonamide, 64% to streptomycin, 6% to tetracycline, and 20% to chloramphenicol.
    Salmonella can be shed intermittently, so a negative culture doesn't mean the animal is truly salmonella-free.

    Reptiles are a risk for infectious diseases and are not recommended for households with children under five, the elderly, pregnant women, or people with compromised immune systems.
