The Basset Hound is a short-legged, scent hound breed that originated in France. Known for their excellent sense of smell, they were originally bred for hunting small game such as rabbits and hares.
Despite their hunting origins, Basset Hounds have become well-known for their laid-back and easy-going personality. They are often described as one of the laziest dog breeds in the world, preferring to lounge around and nap for most of the day.

  1. Got my first Bassett a year ago as a puppy. He has been wide open and very energetic for almost the whole first year. And now he’s start to get very lazy. They are great dogs!

  2. This breed was bred for hunting and it failed miserably. They can't run for their life if they depend on it. They look weird and disabled like their legs are chopped of by some merciless human.

  3. This breed is not lazy. They are smart and athletic. Its people that look at them assume they are lazy and fat.

People are there down fall. This breed are hunters not lazy.

  4. I had one when I was in my teens and early twenties. They are definitely on the other end of the spectrum from the Malinois, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them lazy. Mine was always ready to take me out for a drag. It's amazing how much torque they get from those stubby little legs. 4×4 low range for sure. And they don't drool THAT much. You do have to keep their eyes and ears clean though, especially if they are outside a lot. And don't underestimate the bite force either. What a full grown Basset can do to a large soup bone like the ball end of a steer's leg bone will amaze you, it certainly amazed me. My Mom gave ol' Clyde a huge bone one day for a treat, and I told her that the poor old guy would hardly be able to gnaw on it because it was so big.

She just laughed at me while I watched him EAT it in about five minutes. My brother tried to climb over the fence one night so he could sneak into the house without Mom hearing him, but he forgot about Clyde, and he didn't talk to him first (Clyde didn't bark much). The boy almost lost an ankle for that mistake. Lucky for him, Clyde smelled who it was before he bit down hard, but he was still limping for a couple of days.

When they are puppies, they are so cute when they get to running, trip on their ears, and go sliding across the lawn.

Bassett hounds are really good dogs, and if they ever get out and go for a walk on their own, they will always find their way home. They can TRACK themselves! 😮

  5. I just had to say goodbye to my 15 y.o. basset earlier this year; she was definitely stubborn, but was the sweetest, most caring dog I've ever known. Made me a basset lover for life.

  6. My childhood basset was called Humphrey. He was an absolute gem. Watched over me when I was a baby and let me play with him when I was an infant. He lived to 13. Such a kind, relaxed and loving boy. I miss him very much ❤

  7. I have a basset hound and pitbull mix.He is very energetic and vocal. He howls and bays and is nosey. He investigates everything and gets on everyone's nerves. We love him, dearly.

  8. Best dog I ever had. Was like living with an actual cartoon character. They love walks and play. But want nothing more in life than to chill with you. Never barked. Was never hostile to anybody. But man. They shed like crazy. And drip everywhere after taking a drink of water.

  9. LIES! I have a basset and it’s well known in the community that they do NOT begin to calm down and become “lazy” until after 3 years old. A lot of bassets also use their laziness when it comes to walking. It’s called “flat basset” good luck getting them to move..and yes. Very stubborn.
