Kasese is one of the disaster-prone districts in the Rwenzori Region of Western Uganda. Since 2013 to 2023, Kasese District experienced heavy rains and hailstorm exacerbated by two El-Nino seasons causing floods, landslides, and banks of the major rivers in the district; Lhubiriha, Mubuku, Nyamwamba, and Nyamugasani to overflow. This has resulted in significant damage to both social and economic infrastructure including loss of human lives, crops, livestock, as well as internal displacement of persons. UNICEF has continually responded by providing lifesaving supplies to ensure continuity of critical services of Health, WASH, Education and Child Protection to affected communities.
Also, to strengthen the district’s capacity to manage these recurring disasters, UNICEF collaborated effectively and efficiently with OPM to support Kasese District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) to develop a multi-hazard, multi-sectoral District Contingency Plan (MHDCP) to support effective preparedness, early actions and coordinated response to floods and other crisis events affecting the district.
