Fast-moving wildfires have broken out in southern California, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes.

The Pacific Palisades fire swept through an affluent Los Angeles area home to celebrities, burning properties and prompting evacuation orders. The Eaton fire in Altadena started near a nature reserve. Flames spread so rapidly staff at a senior care centre pushed dozens of residents in wheelchairs and hospital beds down the street. California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, issued a statement on social media saying the state had deployed more than 1,400 firefighters in its attempts to quell the wildfires. Describing the fires as ‘unprecedented’, he said: ‘Emergency officials, firefighters, and first responders are all hands on deck through the night to do everything possible to protect lives’
