Summary:
– The death rattle is a sign that a person is approaching the end of his life. A person usually lives for 23 hours after the death rattle begins.
-This occurs because as consciousness decreases, patients lose their ability to swallow and clear oral secretions. Air moves over these pooled secretions resulting in noisy breathing.
– It is important to know that this is not distressing for the patient because they are non-responsive and deeply asleep at this point.

  5. My mom recently passed 2 days ago and I was there with her till the very end. She had the death rattle but I didn't know it was called that. I miss her.

  6. My goodness, I remember my step-grandmother made this exact sound the day before she died in hospital, she had a pneumonia and was in coma, but at that time I had no idea what a death rattle was, nor I did know she was in her final hours. 😢

  7. Its 2.45 AM. I am sitting in ICU. My mum has Cronic pancreatitis and failing liver. Googled so many things why shes can't speak all of sudden and it led me here. I thought my mum is just snoring and sleeping. She couldn't sleep for weeks. I was glad that she'll wake up bit fresh tomorrow. She was so restless.

  8. Thank you I’m in the hospital with my grandma. She’s been doing good and suddenly backslided. She’s on a high does of Morphine and has been sleeping all dat

  9. I listened to my 10 year make this sound. It was absolutely horrifying. He got bacterial meningitis after spinal surgery and was incredibly poorly. Thankfully after being hooked up for 23 hours a day with Antibiotics, 8 other surgeries over 6 weeks he recovered. The noise he made still haunts me now though, you never recover from hearing it 😢😢

  10. My husband had a widowmaker Sept. 29. He had the sound, the foam, the groan, eyes open, non responsive.

While waiting for the ambulance, i did a sternum rub. Nobody knows why, but it worked to bring him to semi consciousness.

Every day he was in hospital, someone would tell me i saved his life. I don't know how to respond bc I was throwing hail Marys & that shouldn't have worked.

I now know what to listen and watch for. He's here and that's all that matters.

  11. Thank you for helping inform and educate people who are experiencing this with a loved one or who will eventually do so. I wish I had this information before my mom died. It was traumatic to hear as she had a very pronounced death rattle and it sounded like she was struggling to breath. the sound haunted me for months after she passed

  12. THIS, is the sound that indicates that your loved one is about to take their next steps of their journey! No more pain, or suffering, but TRUE PEACE!!! This may sound HORRIBLE, but just know your loved one isn't suffering!
