The Horrifying Biology of the Flood (Compilation) | The Science of Halo's Parasite
Spread The Viralist

Previously published in two parts, today, we’ll begin a deep dive into the biology, physiology, form, and function of The Flood parasite, as made famous in the Halo video game series.

This parasite is a horrifying example of biology run rampant, and in this video, we’ll see just how *inferi redivivus* can conquer entire star systems.

  1. Honestly, if you wanted to do a continuation of this and expound even more on this, Id get into contact with Hidden Xperia, hes at the forefront of Halo content creators and is pretty much a walking encylopedia on the Flood.

  2. Another idea that could be interesting for the monster ecology is a Jorogumo from Japanese mythology.
For anyone who doesn’t know, they’re a yokai which, similar to a lot of creatures, has the top half of a human and the bottom half of another animal. In this case, a giant orbweaver spider.
Sometimes this can vary but that’s the common idea.

I’d love to see what you’d done up with for it, especially after your episodes on mermaids and sirens.

Obviously though, it’s up to you.

  3. Another point to add: Sergeant Johnson managed to outright resist the flood because of the treatments he received during the ORION program, which was the precursor of the SPARTAN-II program of the UNSC to create super soldiers (the II is in honor of all those who died during the ORION program). Johnson also kept some dead Flood cells in him which actually granted him regenerative abilities.

  4. Thank you so much sharing honestly that it's a compilation!
But in all honesty… I completely forgot you uploaded it or whether I watch or not so…
I will watch the compilation all the way through for a reminder, lol.
Frankly I respect it a lot when YouTubers share when something is a compilation (reuploaded mash up)

  5. This is awesome, if you're tackling lore from video games, might I suggest the Elder Scrolls universe? It's my favourite lore from media, and there's a wealth of monsters, shapeshifters and intriguing gods. I do love the Halo lore as well. It's incredible that you were able to travel so far with today's technology.

Alternatively, if you are still entertaining monsters from myths and ancient religions, Celtic, Slavic and even old Christian lore has some incredible creatures to 'pick apart'.

I'm really glad this channel exists, you're doing incredible work entertaining and informing simultaneously.

  6. Can you do Kitsune biology next? Although I personally don’t believe land-dwelling shapeshifters exist, it would be interesting to see you try and explain that aspect of the legend

  7. Actually the real terrifying thing is that the host doesn't lose its intelligence, in the Flood novel there is a chapter of an infected marine and his consciousness is pushed aside as the Flood controls his body

  8. Henry Viley, in his fan-fiction "Premiseverse," suggests that the Volus species from the Mass Effect universe was engineered in prehistory to possess cellular and biological traits radically different from other creatures, with a native biosphere incredibly atypical—specifically to hinder the Reaper species' ability to biologically assimilate them. He further proposes that Volus are prodigiously strong and lethally effective in battle if in their native pressure, gravity, and atmospheric conditions. I wonder how the Volus would fare against the Flood. I prefer the Forerunner terminology for the Flood. The Forerunner word for them would translate into English as "the Thinking Dead," and I see in that a different type of warning, a spiritual one.

  9. I mean, technically speaking, a cave full of these things COULD be considered a strategic weapons cache… Though the lack of control over the scale of the destruction would be a slight issue. 😂

  10. "The earth will end only when God declares it's time to be over. Man will not destroy this earth. This earth will not be destroyed by a flood."
