There are flaws in the sequel trilogy and I don’t hold it or the prequel trilogy in the same regard as the original trilogy thanks to me being a kid at the time of the trilogy and growing up with it. I mean I was 7 for Star Wars and 13 for Jedi. I was the literally the target demographic.
This is to say, one of the goals of the sequel trilogy was to bring different voices in the creative process for each movie. Everyone cheered when Lucasfilm announced that they were going to model the sequel trilogy like the original trilogy with a different director and avoid the single vision of an out of touch creator as happened with the prequels.
The problem with Rise of Skywalker is the same thing that happened with Jedi. After a divisive and risky second chapter they decided to go back to familiar roots of the first of their respective trilogies. Lucas got way more involved in Jedi and of course Abrams returned in Rise. Both tried to undo stuff from the middle movie, both brought back the familiar (Death Star in Jedi/the emperor in Rise). Both resulting in disjointed stories. I mean seriously if made today, how pissed would the nerds be that Han and Chewie are wasted on Endor and not flying the Falcon during the battle of Endor?
I enjoy all Star Wars films to date. The OT is in my heart from childhood and due to that I am able to appreciate the other two trilogies.
The tv shows though? Not as kind.
Mandalorian is bad.
Obi Wan gave us a great Vader but totally unnecessary story.
Asoka is a vanity project for Filoni where all he accomplished is show that things that work as cartoons don’t work as live action.
The Acolyte could have been great if they leaned into plagues instead of the twins and force witch coven crap.
No interest in Skelton crew.
Only Andor has been truly good and that’s thanks to good writing and casting. Not reliant on lore and nostalgia.
Horrible video going over horrible content
You completely skipped over how the entire galaxy's fleet managed to reach Exegol in record time, despite the film stating there were only 16 hours before the Final Order's launch. Given that hyperspace travel has always taken days or weeks across the galaxy, how did all these ships suddenly arrive so quickly? Other than Plot Armor in large amounts…
I love how tempered and neutral these videos are, and I'm trying not to project my own feelings here, but it is funny to me how in the OT and Prequels vids the tone is "There's actually a book explaining this!" vs the sequels where it feels like there's a slight bend more towards "They put out a book explaining this… whoopee"
I think it's a mistake to use the phrase "Star Wars has a bad habit of killing characters only to have them return somehow." Star Wars is mythological, that means a dream space, that means a fantasy arena where anything can happen. It's not "a bad habit," it's a feature. Saying its a bad habit only reinforces the idea that it doesn't belong. I suppose we take if for granted now that Obi-Wan speaks from beyond the grave in ANH, but I feel like at the time the film was released that was a really big deal. How did he do that? Was it in Luke's head or was it real? THE DEAD SPEAK indeed.
Bet this was the hardest one to do, given the amount of bs 😂 it shows too with how many are "we don't have answers yet" or tryna wing it lol
People made a big deal out of the "small moment" of jump troopers because it was simply bad writing. It was akin the the "somehow Palpatine has returned". Just incredibly lazy. This was a bad movie and was rightly criticized for moments like these.
Also Luke says that Leia sensed the death of her son at the end of her Jedi path. Meaning that Ben had to have already been born and she clearly wasn’t pregnant in the training sequence
Call me crazy, but what if Rey’s parents or at least her mother aren’t dead
Looking at the sequel films, I think a lot of cool and interesting concepts were introduced. How they were handled, well that was terrible. Minimal explanations on big lore changing events were the staple of the sequel trilogy. You say that fans getting upset about the “They fly now!” segment is an overreaction because most viewers aren’t lore nerds. I agree, however most of the setup for this film seems to be coming from external sources such as books, comics, and games. That’s okay to an extent, but the fact that key details and story moments to set up this film is covered in expanded material is the worst part of the film. Makes the writing come off very poor and barely thought out… the script and story beats simply feel very “convenient”
The Starspeeder 1000 was going to make a cameo in the citizens fleet but unfortunately it was cut
Are you gonna do rogue one and solo?
I know a lot of people hate this movie, but I really love it
Gosh, I LOVE this movie ❤️
Shadow of the Sith is a fantastic book! Love this video, and I love Rise of Skywalker!
Thank you so much for these. I truly enjoy these type of videos! So much information. I know these must take a while to make.
I’d also love to see these with the shows as well (if possible)
Yes! I love this movie. Finally something to dig in!
Reviewing this? Maybe we’ve been a bit harsh on this movie. It’s not bad by any means, it just had so much missed potential.
For "How do the Jedi of Old Speak To Rey?"
The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary mentions that the temple on Exegol is rumored to be built upon a Vergence in the Force that the Sith Eternal were searching for. It is also mentiomed I beliwve that it may be connected to the Vergence Scatter, a.k.a the World Between Worlds.
My take on the scene is that Rey is actually briefly entering the World Between Worlds and hearing the voices of Jedi past that way!
Which makes the visual of Rey looking up through the cracks of the temple, past the ships and electricity to see a field of stars make a bit more sense.
Boy did Shadow of the Sith do a LOT of legwork for this movie.
Love you star wars explained
When a movie needs multiple novels, comics, and other source for it to begin to make sense, it's demonstrably a terrible movie.
Thanks so much for a valiant attempt to fill in the gaps. Kudos.
As far as I'm concerned, Legends is the real Canon for everything that happens after Episode VI.
19:02 isn’t it the fate of all beings in the Star Wars universe to become one with the Force?
Great video. Guess I’ll have to grab the novelization. Seems to explain the many head scratching things the movie has.
Can I get a count on how many times Dathan gets stabbed in this video? Love this movie. You're doing the Force's work here. 🙏🏻
You both are doing so much of the heavy lifting for this movie. I give you a lot of credit!
We really needed a lot of this explanation in the actual movie rather than playing a random round of Fortnite with the Goku skin and also reading
There's so much context in the opening moments of the film that really should have been included. Tucking in key details into Fortnite, reference books, novelizations, and the like was such a bad move. Viewers shouldn't have to chase all over the place in order to understand what's going on. The opening moments of the film feel is like shooting viewers out of a cannon…it all happens so fast and leaves us a bit rudderless (at best) or confused (at worst).
