Alexander Hartigan (Guy Pearce) is a 19th century scientist and inventor whose beloved fiancée is tragically killed in an accident. For a change, he invents a machine to try and go back in time to save her. However, no matter how hard he tries, he cannot change her death.
In his search for answers, Alexander decides to tune the time machine to the future in hopes of finding a way to change his fate. He accidentally travels to the year 802701 A.D. and discovers that humanity has split into two races: the peaceful Eloi on the surface and the brutal Morlocks underground. He comes to realize that the Morlocks prey on the Eloi and are ruled by a powerful Morlock leader (Jeremy Irons).
In helping the Eloi to rebel against the Morlocks, Alexander eventually makes the decision to destroy the time machine and fight alongside the people of the future to change their destiny. Through his journey, the film explores the philosophical questions of the paradox of time travel’s destiny, the possibility of human evolution, and whether change is possible.
