Take a look at the practical and digital effects that brought eight natural disasters to life, from the apocalyptic events of “2012” to the biblical deluge of “Noah.”
Hollywood has always been keen on disaster flicks. The genre is unique in the sheer size of the spectacles that must be created, with special effects teams building entire cities or worlds only to level them. In this episode of “Movies Insider,” we break down the diverse techniques used to create extreme weather phenomena on the big screen, from miniature effects to shaky deck sets to a massive light and rain rig, and show you exactly what these effects looked like behind the scenes.
We do a deep dive into how “San Andreas” used CG to sculpt a deep fissure in the earth, providing the backdrop for The Rock’s heroics, and how “The Impossible” recreated the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami with real water, filming Naomi Watts’ and Tom Holland’s scenes in Europe’s largest water tank.
Plus, see how “Mad Max: Fury Road” created a hellish sandstorm fit for George Miller’s dystopian vision, how Darren Aronofsky brought the biblical story of Noah’s Ark and the Great Flood to life with large-scale rain effects in “Noah,” and how Paul W. S. Anderson’s “Pompeii” made an exacting recreation of the ancient city only to later destroy it with a volcanic eruption, earthquake, and tsunami. And find out how “Into the Storm” made a fantastical fire tornado look believable and how apocalypse movies like “2012” and “The Day After Tomorrow” used groundbreaking special effects to imagine end-of-the-world scenarios.
“2012” is now available from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

How 8 Extreme Weather Scenes Were Made for Movies | Movies Insider

1:18 no way that’s right lol
I wonder what Ray Harryhausen could have done with todays tech, look at what he achieved with Old School tech, Sinbad was a classic example of stop motion and other effects.
12:06 You should not put Mad Max here. They’ve try their best to not use any CGI in this movie
Of all the disasters that happened in The Day After Tomorrow, they chose that one scene to give us the “inside” on? 🤨
why did they need cgi for showing the crumbling streets of LA… seriously one just needs to walk outside with an iphone and you have your movie 🤣
Ok earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis are not weather. Maybe adjust your title.
hmmm water with food dye … hmm i wonder if somebody just got thirsty and drank from it while swimming 😂
Love these Movie Insider videos and this one is no less fascinating, thank you for sharing! The scene from "The Impossible" wasn't "climactic", as it happened near the start, not at the climax. It was certainly cataclysmic though… That film is outstanding.
San Andreas was my favorite. By the way, I've watched only 2 of those movies on the list. This and The Day after Tomorrow.
They could have written 2012 where instead of the world ending in 2012 make the world get hit by a runaway effect such as mass seismic and volcanic activity
… and even after all that work they still all are c®ap
Wast of money and destroy time and weather
Imagine too many resources bought, too much effort to being put to set and destroy the things for a shot but needs to repeat the process because of the one stupid actor that smiles.
More VFX the more flops we are going to get
Oh begini toh cara bikinnya..
Akhirnya BAB ku bisa lancar…😂
Awesome.
My movie will be on theater december 17 2025(gentlemen)
Fun!
Amazing that there are adults today who don't know how to pronounce biblical words like "deluge" and are employed as professional voice-over artists. Did all the grown-ups die out, or what?
15:31 I can’t handle this dinner alone, come and help me.
The Impossible is a Spanish movie filmed near Alicante, in the eastern mediterranean coast of the country. The film studios are now closed.
Hollywood: the voice of climate change. Also, a cause of it
the are real artis now a days, smart human are aweome, they are modern leonardo davinci
Waste of water
I feel bad for that Porsche lol
I always wondered how a lot of this was filmed…..crazy what theyll go thru just to get 'the shot'
1.000.000 gallons of water? Are you bloody serious? Just for a movie? What a waste…
I’d rather less spent on effects and more spent on better writing.
So next time Hollyweird give us lectures about climate change and carbon tax… get fckd.. all that's waste.

Too much water 💦?
Repent to Jesus Christ!!
“For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

YES HOLLOWOOD

The algorithm knew that this was something I’ve wondered lately but was too lazy to google
There's a reason why I'm not an action film maker.
2012 still holds 1st place in the worst films I've ever seen
1:16 "The crew went through 500,000 tons of steel". No they didn't!
I can't believe they wasted so much water 😡.
Great work👍👍👍
I feel bad for the stuntman just hanging and flying around for the fire tornado scene
15:53 When I get home, get ready because I am not letting you go. Not a second. I miss you that much.
I hope they didnt wasted all that water after… 🙁
