GoPro Awards: Tree Well Rescue at Mt. Baker

Spread The Viralist

Tree wells are a danger wherever there is fresh snow. Francis Zuber was skiing in Washington when he caught glance of a partially buried snowboard. Ian Steger, a rider from a different group, was buried upside-down and unable to free himself. Francis, trained in avalanche-rescue protocol, sprung into action to clear Ian’s airway.

The mountains don’t care how much experience you have or how careful you are. Accidents can and will happen—riding with company that is prepared and educated is the best way to stay safe in dangerous terrain. Thank you, GoPro Awards recipient Francis, for showing us what it means to “Be a HERO” 🙏

  1. Was he the first rider who went ahead of Francis? Or is this just a random person who was found. Francis you are a hero dude you deserve the award and much more. A mother gets to see her child again. A father his son. A family gets a piece of their family back. Respect.

  2. This man accepted death I’m pretty sure he’s been screaming for some time until he lost hope and the other guy was a hero he risked his own life.

  3. Quran 5: 32: “That is why We decreed for the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul, without [its being guilty of] manslaughter or corruption on the earth, is as though he had killed all mankind, and whoever saves a life is as though he had saved all mankind”.

  4. Never stop near trees, kids. The snow there is extremely soft and you can fall right through. And never take off your snowboard in powder areas. It could be as deep as the tree is tall. You aren't getting out.

  5. On behalf of skiers and borders everywhere, thank you Francis Zuber! You humanity saved Ian Steger. I'm even awe of the fight you had to put in just to get back up the mountain in that snow! Never seen snow like it myself, but I've learned from your video what to do if ever in the same situation, thank you.
