Typhoon Goni, or Super Rolly, was one of the most powerful typhoons to strike the Philippines in recent memory. On November 1, 2020, it made landfall in the Bicol Region of the Philippines, causing widespread destruction and displacement. The typhoon was the ninth typhoon and the eighteenth tropical storm of the Pacific hurricane season of 2020.
Typhoon Goni formed on October 26, 2020, and intensified into a super typhoon on October 31, 2020, with sustained winds of 195 mph and gusts of up to 240 mph. The storm maintained its intensity as it made landfall in the Philippines, inflicting catastrophic damage to the region.
The Bicol Region, which consists of Albay, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes, sustained the most harm from Typhoon Goni. Homes, structures, and infrastructure were destroyed by the storm’s mudslides, flash floods, and high gusts. A week prior, the region was devastated by Typhoon Molave.
According to the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), approximately $530 million in damages were caused by Typhoon Goni, which affected more than three million people. The typhoon resulted in 25 fatalities and displaced thousands of people in need of aid.
