PORTUGAL – Welcome to Portugal and one of the best foods that everyone loves in Portuguese frango asado, or piri piri chicken as most of us know – it’s a style of marinated grilled chicken that’s served with spicy piri piri chili oil.
Most Portuguese say that the best piri piri chicken is from southern Portugal where it originates. But you’ll find it everywhere in the country and everywhere has a different style. So we’re starting the north and working our way down to the south for the best piri piri chicken tour across Portugal!
Churrasqueira Portuguesa do Amial, Porto (https://maps.app.goo.gl/E9G9Cryu5epsBhpG9) – First up Porto, and thank it was great to hang out with my friends André Apolinário and Ricardo Brochado from Taste Porto for our first taste of frango piri piri.
Rio de Mel, Lisbon (https://maps.app.goo.gl/vNJ3SqzYVfZy4rjDA) – We’re continuing to Lisbon, where you’ll find Portuguese grilled chicken on just about every corner. This place does it extremely well, and it’s juicy and full of flavor.
Ramires, Guia (https://maps.app.goo.gl/dZKMvFecLG1vSDnR9) – Mention piri piri chicken to anyone in Portugal and they will think of the small town of Guia, and probably to Ramires, the original piri piri chicken, and what many people still say is the best in all of Portugal. I’m not going to argue, it was one of the best grilled chickens I’ve ever had – the chicken was small and crispy, and so flavorful. With the chili oil, it made it even better. The restaurant is huge, and people flock here just to eat grilled chicken.
Restaurante O Teodósio, Guia (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZKXZFRzeK6Zt4pPi7) – Just down the road in the same small town you’ll find Restaurante O Teodósio. It’s also very popular and I wanted to taste it to get some comparison.
Churrasqueira O Recife, Faro (https://maps.app.goo.gl/B3z1yobX2krGyjSq9) – Finally, just down the coast is Churrasqueira O Recife where they’ve been grilling chicken unchanged for decades. The texture and doneness of the chicken is perfect, absolutely amazing.
Piri piri chicken was an incredible history and to this day it’s one of the most famous Portuguese foods that you’ll find around the world.

After coming to Portugal for the first time, I had the best of time eating Portuguese food and theres no place that match the deliciousness of their cuisine. It ruined my cravings because I usually look for Portuguese food but nothing like its deliciousness compared to living here in Macau lol
