February 23, 2023 my friend and I went diving out on the west side of Oahu. I spotted this turtle with fishing line wrapped around its front left fin and leading to its mouth. Thankfully there was no hook. We were able remove all of it. We theorize that it had gotten tangled in the line and the turtle was trying its best to untangle itself by biting and gathering up the line in its mouth. We eventually found the rest of the fishing line tangled on the reef and were able to remove it. We assume the line was flown out using a drone given that we were over a quarter mile from shore. The fishing line we found had the same color and amount of degradation as the one on the turtle. Our theory is that the turtle had gotten tangled, was able break free, then tried removing the fishing line itself.

The problem is that turtle is floating and had huge swell on neck, means got gas and infection and can’t sink to bottom to feed itself, if no rehab and antibiotics,it will die 😢💔

This Rescue Operation should have carried out best in dry land or in a boat, much easier to do and a lot less suffering to turtle, plz consider those options in the future. But very pleased one turtle is free again. Plastic is the Enemy of the Ocean, land and the wildlife, STOP PLASTIC USE !!

for every one turtle with a plastic straw in its nostril there are 10,000 sea turtles ensnared in discarded fishing gear and yet we outlaw plastic straws but NOT plastic fish gear??!!!
You could easily drown it if doing this in open water.

Why is it that when these guys do a rescue, it doesn't matter Turtles, Whales, what ever, their knives can't cut butter!! My God those knives are as dull as I am!! They should be using wire cutters, and pliers. Sharpen your damn knives if you're going to save marine life. Nice save though.
