The rebels were no Libyans, they were foreign mercenaries armed and paid by the US, they killed him because he was going to organize all the oil producing African countries to sell their oil in gold only and create a new currency, the gold dinar, over which international finance would have had no control. Of course that couldn't be tolerated so they invented a ridiculous story, they killed him, destroyed his country and Libya's huge reserves of gold disappeared. There were no rebels there, Libya had the highest standards of living in Africa and the terrorist thing was a sham, Lockerbie was an Iranian operation, he just refused to play by western rules. Gaddafi was removed because he did not do what the USA wanted him to do and because Libya was more difficult to manipulate than the other N.African states in flux at the time.
Libya had actually stabilized and prospered under Gaddafi's administration even though he was a very strange and unpredictable individual. That is not unusual among Muslim leaders of note.
Since the USAF wrecked Libya (flying from the UK) it has been in stasis yet could, by now, be a leading energy producer.
