Wow. Now I know why nobody will shut up about this movie.
This movie actually understands the Joker's twisted philosophy, and built a disturbingly realistic origin story around it.
To the Joker, everything we attribute intrinsic value to (morality, society, "the system", etc) is one big joke. Just watch the interrogation scene from the Dark Knight if you're not sure what I mean. That's why Arthur mentioned that thing about comedy being subjective during his interview. It's the same deal.
As an aspiring comedian and someone with a laughing condition, Arthur would have eventually looked as the shitting mess his life had devolved into and thought, "This whole thing is like a sick joke!"
This Joker is like nothing we've ever seen before, but I think I finally understand why. That's because these are the days when the Joker was born. With this Joker, we got to see the days when the man behind him (Arthur Fleck) died a slow, painful death. We got to see the first glimpses of the manipulative, ingenious madman he would become (killing Randall with a pair of scissors, sneaking in to see Thomas Wayne with a concierge uniform, starting a brawl in the train, that whole damn interview scene, ad nauseum).
To all the people linking this to incels, I have a counter-argument. Real people who are like Thomas Wayne and Murr-ay Franklin (I love how he said Murr-ay), they're scared. They realize that if they screw up badly enough, this could happen in the real world. So they chose a scapegoat and stigmatized anyone who thought this was in any way realistic.
Personally, I think it would take something game changing to make anything like the clowns movement possible. But I agree with the movie's description. This is indeed a cautionary tale.
The moral: do what you can to help people out. Don't be a dick. You never know what spark might set off a societal explosion.
P.S. That "punch out" joke was pretty funny.
